Graphic Designer — Art Director — Visual Storyteller

I helped launch Star Tribune Magazine in 2017, developing its visual identity and design system from the ground up. I led creative direction and design across covers, features and departments, collaborating with editors, photographers and illustrators to shape each issue from concept through production.

I led art direction and design for the 2014 launch of Capital, The Boston Globe’s weekly political section. Working with the newsroom, I combined bold typography, original illustration, photography and information graphics to make politics and public affairs coverage accessible, engaging and full of personality.

Across business, food, lifestyle and special sections at The Minnesota Star Tribune, I found visual ideas in everything from personal finance to Thanksgiving dinner. This selection brings together my original illustrations and photo composites, commissioned artwork and photography, with typography and design tailored to each story.

At The Washington Post from 2010 to 2014, I developed visual concepts and designed pages across Arts, Food, Travel and Sunday Style, among others. I commissioned illustrators and collaborated with editors and photographers, shaping everything from cultural criticism to food photography into distinctive editorial presentations.

For Opinion Exchange, I developed visual concepts that gave complex arguments a clear point of entry. Working with editors and illustrators — or creating the imagery myself — I used visual metaphor, photography and typography to help readers connect with political, social and cultural ideas.

For this special issue of Star Tribune Magazine, I worked with colleagues to select and organize images documenting an extraordinary year in Minnesota and American history. I designed the issue around bold chapter typography and carefully paced photographic layouts, giving the images room to convey both the upheaval of 2020 and its quieter human moments.
